New jobs are hard. They’re even harder when they’re in places you’ve never been before. When you’re moving somewhere new, the best thing to do is reach out to your friends and contacts who’ve lived there before. The second best thing to do is use Walkscore.
Walkscore is one of my favorite sites, and while it’s not perfect, it’s certainly helpful. What Walkscore does is provide walkability ratings (i.e. how many amenities are within a mile or so) based on a city or a specific address. That means you can use it broadly or specifically. On the one hand, it’s a great tool to figure out the neighborhoods within a given city you want to focus on during your housing search; on the other hand, you can use it to make sure an actual apartment isn’t in the middle of nowhere.
This probably sounds kind of confusing, but really it’s not. Just head over to Walkscore and play around with it. I’m sure you’ll be hooked in no time at all, just like I was!
